Let’s say you filed your documents with Unites States Citizenship and Immigration Service (USCIS) and now you are waiting to hear from USCIS with the decision on your case. Cases such as filing I-130 (US citizen bringing to the USA his/her parents, spouse, children, or siblings) can take a couple of months to over 10 years to be finalized. Usually, you know the general timeline for your case to be decided. However, sometimes USCIS makes the decision faster than expected or send you a request for additional evidence (RFE). It is possible for the letter with the decision or an RFE to be lost in the mail (especially, if it was mailed during the busy season at the post office, such as Thanksgiving or Christmas holidays). If your letter is lost you may miss extremely important deadlines to answer the RFE or to file subsequent documents.

The receipt number is usually found on all correspondence from USCIS near left or right upper corner of the document. You can also hire an attorney who will monitor your case and will receive duplicate notices from USCIS to insure you do not miss important deadlines.
